April 25th, 9:00am – 3:30pm

Portsmouth, NH

Human beings, by their very nature, are storytellers. Whether in the ways in which they communicate their thoughts with others, but also in what they tell themselves, and in how they navigate change, interpersonal dynamics, and their own fears.

Mastering an understanding of the nature of stories, and how stories affect the work environment both positively and negatively, can make or break an organization’s culture.

This course will give you an opportunity to explore your own deeply held stories, as well as help you to see and navigate the web of stories present in your organization in order to create a healthier and more productive environment. It is for current organizational leaders and future leaders.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will identify their own stories that are keeping them stuck, or in thought patterns that are restricting their growth as effective leaders.
  • Participants will explore the web of stories that colleagues may be carrying and chart the ways in which these affect the culture of the organization.
  • Participants will learn strategies to support their colleagues and direct reports to rebalance the narratives creating interpersonal conflicts and low morale.
  • Participants will learn strategies to affect positive change in their organizations and assist in stronger buy-in with the organization’s mission and vision to create and maintain a healthier organizational culture.

This course has been approved for SHRM PDCs

I’ll be presenting a talk called: “Unstorying the Shadow: A Mythic Journey Through the Hidden Stories that Keep us Stuck” on Friday, November 8th at 4:45pm.

When we think of the Shadow, we often conjure up spectral images of foreboding characters following us, ready to strike out to scare or harm us. But perhaps it is in that resistance to it, and the potential for fear that it evokes, that we misunderstand its true power? Shadow is simply hidden away from us…by us. What if we were brave enough to finally face it? And yes, there may be old wounds and pain loitering in that space, but Jung offered us the promise of the golden shadow as well; the beauty and gifts that lie dormant within that space; the skills and talents and characteristics we’ve pushed away because we felt they were “not good enough,” “wrong,” or judged as being “foolish?” Where are those hidden places residing in us, and how do we find our way in? And once found, how do we use that awareness to move towards a deeper sense of wholeness?

In this presentation, we’ll look at what it means to Unstory our Self. How do we see those stories more clearly if they are so hidden from our sight? We will explore such mythic characters as Medusa and her offspring Pegasus and Chrysaor, who demonstrate that even through trauma and betrayal, both a wellspring of creative inspiration and a conqueror of monsters can emerge, as well as the figure of Baba Yaga and her threshold questions, beckoning us to face the Shadow she represents. Through these stories, we find ourselves journeying into the dark parts to find the gold within, and perhaps, discover an even bigger well of light than we could ever have imagined. The Shadow offers an avenue for integration; an opportunity to see the strengths hidden from us; and an opportunity to become more of who we are, if we are willing to face that Shadow within.
